The Temple is the new parish church that Antonio Canova had wanted to build at his own expense for his native country. The foundation stone was laid on July 11, 1819. The whole community of Possagno, indeed the whole Pedemontana is involved in this project.
It was up to the Sculptor, instead, to provide materials detached from the territory and to keep 250 workers in addition to transport and shooting animals. Canova, however, will not have the chance to see his work completed: he died, in fact, in Venice on October 13, 1822.
It will be the task of his brother, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Sartori Canova, to complete the construction of the solemn building. The Temple was consecrated only ten years later, in 1832.
