The British cemetery of Giavera del Montello houses the graves of 417 Commonwealth soldiers who died in this area during WW1. In fact, in 1918 in Giavera, a sector held by the British, there was a violent offensive by the Austrian troops that cost the lives of many soldiers.

This holy place is characterized by a close link with the surrounding environment, assuming the appearance of a well-kept garden. There are 417 marble stems, which as in all British cemeteries are all of equal shape and size and bear engraved generalities of the deceased, the age at the time of death and the role in the army. In some cases, there are also phrases, coats of arms and symbols related to religious affiliation.

The English cemetery is located in Via Chiesa a Giavera del Montello and to get there, after having parked the car, you follow a short avenue surrounded by olive groves. At the entrance you immediately notice the Sacrifice Cross and a staircase with two inscriptions on the sides, one in Italian and the other in English, as a tribute of honor of the Italian people to Allied soldiers who died during the war of 1915/1918. At the end of the meadow, there is the Stone of Remembrance, a stone altar between two large magnolias in which the phrase “Their name liveth for Evermore” (Their name lives forever) was engraved.
